Responsible Gambling

Betting should be entertainment β€” not a way to earn money or escape problems. If it's starting to feel like the latter, this page is for you.

The Reality of Sports Betting

The bookmaker always has a mathematical edge. Over thousands of bets, the house wins. This doesn't mean you can't enjoy betting β€” many people bet recreationally and responsibly for years β€” but it does mean treating it as entertainment spending, not an investment strategy.

The South African National Gambling Board estimates that approximately 4–6% of SA gamblers experience some level of problem gambling. Recognising the signs early makes a huge difference.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Problem gambling usually develops gradually. These are the signs that betting may be becoming harmful:

πŸ’Έ

Betting more than you can afford to lose, or borrowing money to bet

πŸ”„

"Chasing losses" β€” placing bigger bets to recover what you've lost

🀐

Hiding your betting from family or friends

😰

Feeling anxious, irritable, or restless when not betting

⏰

Spending more time betting than you intended to

πŸ’

Gambling to escape stress, depression, or everyday problems

🏠

Neglecting work, family, or other responsibilities because of betting

πŸ“‰

Betting affects your finances, relationships, or mental health

Quick Self-Check

If three or more of these apply to you, consider speaking to a counsellor. Tick all that apply:

Tools to Keep Betting Safe

πŸ’³ Deposit Limits

All SA-licensed bookmakers allow you to set daily, weekly, or monthly deposit limits. Once set, they cannot be increased immediately β€” there's a cooling-off period. Set limits proactively, not reactively.

⏸️ Time-Out / Break

Most bookmakers offer a short-term break option (24 hours to 30 days) where your account is temporarily suspended. Use this if you feel you need a cooling-off period.

🚫 Self-Exclusion

If you want to stop betting altogether, request self-exclusion from any SA-licensed bookmaker. You can exclude for 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, or permanently. The bookmaker is legally required to honour this and cannot accept bets from excluded accounts.

πŸ“Š Reality Checks

Some bookmaker apps allow you to enable session reminders β€” pop-ups that show how long you've been betting and how much you've spent. Enable these in your account settings.
